Scrogin/Haviland Collection, 1844-1887 (Bulk 1860-1870).

This collection consists of eighty-one (81) letters and undated notes that are to and from various members of the Scrogin and Haviland families. The primary sender/recipients were Susan Terrell Scrogin and Henry H. Haviland. The collection is divided into ten (10) chronological sections. The first nine sections deal with Sue and Henry, the last section has letters from their daughter Sidney Robert Haviland. The bulk of the letters in this collection were written just prior to, during and just after the Civil War. Many events such as the Battle at Perryville, Lincoln enlisting slaves into the Union Army, the burning of Cynthiana in 1864, seeing Black Abolitionists in Washington DC, and the release of Sue's brother from a Union prison camp are described. Additionally, there are many letters that deal with political views, economic hardships, and social mores of the day.
